Members of the RTI Kerala Federation will meet the Governor on Thursday to present their case against the appointment of Sony B. Thengamom as state information commissioner.
According to the federation, Thengamom’s appointment is wrong because he was a member of the state committee of the Communist Party of India when his name was nominated for the post of the commissioner.
Though the RTI Act is silent about the selection criteria of the information commissioners, it disallows a person belonging to any political party from holding the post.
The commissioner is appointed by a selection committee comprising of the chief minister, leader of opposition in the assembly and a cabinet minister.
In the wake of oppositions, the Governor has once turned down Thengamom’s name when it was sent by the selection committee.
However, later the government reportedly told the governor that Thengamom had quit all the political posts.
