Ramesh Jena wants to exercise his franchise from Berhampur Central Jail

Congress MLA Ramesh Jena, who is lodged in Berhampur Central Jail has asked the prison authorities to make special arrangements, so that he could exercise his franchise in the Rajya Sabha election scheduled to be held in June 17, official sources said today.

Jena, the Congress MLA from Sanakhemundi in Ganjam district is lodged in jail in connection with a murder case.

Jena has already prayed to the Assembly Speaker, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Director General of Police and Inspector General (Prisons) to make arrangement for him to exercise his constitutional right and to take part in the crucial vote. He has appealed in a letter dashed to the authorities through the jail authorities.

He is now an undertrial prisoner and innocent in the eyes of the law, said his advocate Dipak Patnaik.

Police arrested Jena on May 13 last in connection with Rabi Behera alias Chicken Rabi murder case on January 1 here.

We are waiting for instructions from high authorities, Inspector General (Prisons) V. Thiyagarajan said.
