Aligarh Muslim University students on Tuesday took out a protest march against alleged rising number of crimes in the state.

The students also handed over a memorandum to the district authorities, addressed to the President of India, demanding "immediate arrest" of Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya for allegedly "masterminding" the killing of the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Kunda last Saturday.

AMU Students' Union has announced it will soon hold a candle march to protest the manner in which incidents of violence, including communal violence, have allegedly risen after the Samajwadi Party came to power in the state.

The Executive Committee of the AMU Teachers' Association (AMUTA) held an emergency meeting last night and expressed its sense of deep sorrow and concern over the killing and "reign of terror" which they said was prevailing in Pratapgarh district since the past several months.

AMUTA President Abdul Qaiyyum said in a statement that he had written a letter to SP President Mulayam Singh Yadav demanding "immediate removal of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister" for "failing to control law and order situation".

Qaiyyum alleged that Akhilesh Yadav had not only failed to control the rising incidents of communal violence in UP but has been "protecting Raja Bhaiyya", whose name has figured in a number of crimes including incidents of communal violence in the state.

He said, "if senior police officials are not safe in Uttar Pradesh, who else can feel secure".
