The Delhi government will withdraw the word 'chura' from cast certificates issued to scheduled cast and scheduled tribe.
Its standing counsel Najmi Waziri informed the Delhi high court on Wednesday that a decision in this regard was taken recently.
A division bench of chief justice Dipak Misra and justice Sanjiv Khanna was hearing a PIL against the revenue department of the Delhi government for using the “derogatory” word. The petition stated that 'chura' replaced the word 'Valmiki' in 2010. Members of the community, according to the petition, too object to the label.
Hundreds of people belonging to the Valmiki community last week protested at Rajghat against the use of the term.
