Come clear on death, injury figures in gas tragedy: Jabbar

He also said that the MP govt does not need any sanction to set up a special court for speedily disposal of appeals

PTI | December 6, 2011

The Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan today urged Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to rise above politics and take a clear stand on the death toll and injuries in the 1983 industrial disaster.

Sangathan Convenor Abdul Jabbar told PTI that there are a lot of misgivings about the number of people killed or injured in the gas tragedy.

These need to be sorted out as the figures (of death and injuries) given by the state and the Centre differ, he said.

He also said that the Madhya Pradesh government does not need any sanction to set up a special court for speedily disposal of appeals in the gas disaster case.

"It is sad that the Madhya Pradesh government is not doing this," the Convenor said.

He said the Chief Minister had written a letter to the Prime Minister on the Bhopal Gas Disaster but added that it was not enough.

"I feel that the Bhopal Gas Disaster issue should not be used for deriving political mileage as was indicated by the Chief Minister's demand to give compensation to 20 unaffected wards in the city," Jabbar said.
