Dharia to get Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration

The award carries a citation and cash prize of five lakhs

Former union minister Mohan Dharia was on Monday selected for the 26th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for his yeoman's service in promoting and preserving spirit of national integration.

This was announced today by Motilal Vohra, Member Secretary of the committee for Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.

86-year-old Dharia, who currently stays in Pune and is a Padma Vibhushan awardee, was selected for the 2010 award for his work in promoting and preserving spirit of national integration in the country.

The award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs five lakh.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the committee for Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration, will present the award to Dharia at a function on October 31, Indira Gandhi's death anniversary.

The award was constituted by Congress in its centenary year to give recognition to outstanding contribution to the cause by an individual or institution.

Besides being a lawyer, Dharia is an environmentalist and runs a non-government organisation Vanrai.

He was elected to Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha and has been Union Minister and Deputy Chairperson of Planning Commission from December 1990 to June 1991.
