Growing Bihar needs larger infrastructure doses, investment shots

Panel discussion at Governance Now Forum 'Bihar on the move' - What Bihar needs next

GN Bureau | August 21, 2010

The Bihar landscape is changing, quite literally. From bridges to roads, schools to malls, infrastructure is looking at a likely boom. But is this change sustainable?

A panel of experts drew a list of musts for Bihar's future.

Rituraj Singh, chief operating officer, SI securities

"Bihar has a long way to go before it can be called a 'recovered state'. It's well on path to recovery, though.

Bringing back the large population of Biharis working outside in low-skilled jobs, to come and work in the state in high-skilled, high paying jobs is a must if you want a fillip for the state's economy.

Microfinance could work to remove poverty in the state - almost to the tune of Rs 4,800 cr.

Instead of inviting big investors, we should call the Bihari entrepreneurs to come back to the state to invest.

Amit Kapur. Professor, Management Development Institute

The most critical thing is that there is a huge land mass in Bihar which needs to be tapped to the fullest. Secondly, we should see what we  can do to attract people back in Bihar. People have been leaving this state for decades now. They will not come back overnight. We need to create favourable situations for them.

There was a time when Nalanda was the seat of knowledge in the world. It is ironical that we are not promoting Nalanda and other such places as tourist destination. Bihar has an immense potential of tourism which needs to be tapped. Almost all the government s have ignored it.

Anil Sharma, CMD, Amrapali

"If there is an infrastructural development then only there is a development of real estate, which is an overall upliftment of living standard in terms of housing, sanitation and health care."
