Kamal Nath puts weight behind a national regulator for real estate

Says centre needs to focus on cities as much as it does on rural development

On the first day of assuming charge as the union urban development minister, Kamal Nath has said that a regulator for real estate in the country will be considered on a high priority by the ministry.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Nath also endorsed the PPP model in urban infrastructure and said that more such projecvts need to eb encouraged. He said that his ministry's aim will be to create an equitable and sustainable urban habitat. The minister said that the centre should focus as much on urban development as it has on rural development so far. "Some of the big ticket projects have gone toward rural development. Equal emphasi on cities' infrastructure is needed," he sadi.

He also stated that the urban development ministry was scaling its plans for the national capital, claiming that Delhi will have 415-kms of metro connectivity by 2017, much bigger than London's present network.
