Arvind Kejriwal, social activist and member of Team Anna, has welcomed Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s commitment on Lokpal but added that the passage of the bill will be more assuring than empty words.

“We sincerely hope the government would honour her commitment of getting a strong and effective Lokpal during the winter session. Mere speeches would not be enough from the government's side,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.

He was reacting to Gandhi’s statement that corruption could not be fought with words and the government was serious in tackling the graft in the country.

“These days there is a lot of talk about corruption. There is no doubt that corruption is a big disease and effects everyone. There should be an atmosphere against corruption. But speeches cannot end corruption,” Gandhi said in her speech which was read to a crowd in Uttarakhand by defence minister A K Antony.

This was the UPA chairperson’s first public address after her return from abroad where she underwent a surgery for an undisclosed ailment.
Gandhi could not attend the rally in Gauchar, Uttarakhand as she was suffering from fever.

“Corruption cannot end by pointing fingers at others. Everyone should introspect. It cannot end if some think their corruption is better than others. This is what is happening these days. I want to ask these people who gave RTI? Who brought transparency in public life? We did," she said.
