PM thanks bankers for jan dhan success

Banks told to ensure 100 percent Aadhaar seeding

GN Bureau | January 24, 2015

Prime minister Narendra Modi has acknowledged the efforts of the banks in opening 11.5 crore accounts under pradhan mantri jan dhan yojna (PMJDY). In an email sent on Saturday to all the bankers across the country, Modi has also asked the banks to link all the accounts opened under the scheme with Aadhaar.

Prime minister asked the banks to redouble the efforts in this respect and also stressed on the efforts made in ensuring financial literacy among the people.

"We need to redouble efforts on financial literacy. Aadhaar seeding needs to improve further. Bank Mitras need to be enabled to carry out RuPay card and Aadhaar enabled transactions in villages itself,” Modi’s mail said.

Appreciating the efforts of the banks in meeting the target of opening 10 crore accounts before the deadline of January 26 Modi said, "It gives me great pleasure to have seen the exceptional work done by you all in ensuring the success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. The target set for opening bank accounts for all households has been surpassed well ahead of the target date of 26 January, 2015,"

Reminding the bankers of the reason behind opening these accounts, Modi added, “We need to build on this success and leverage these accounts to provide our citizens a wide range of credit, insurance and pension services. We also need to maintain high standards of customer service.”

Most of the states have les than 50 percents accounts that have been Aadhaar seeded. One of the reasons behind the low level of Aadhaar seeding is that in most of the states percentage of population with Aadhaar is quite low. For instance in states like Assam and Arunachal Pradesh the percentage of total population with Aadhaar is less than 10 percent

Altogether, 11.5 crore accounts have been opened under Jan Dhan Yojana in less than five months. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has exceeded initial and enhanced target by big margin. It now covers 99.74 per cent of households.
