Soon, Delhi to Meerut in less than an hour

The Urban Development ministry has identified three corridors for the Rapid Rail Transport System

GN Bureau | August 23, 2010

Soon, you can soon expect a smooth ride between Delhi and various satellite towns in world class trains. The ministry of urban development has identified eight corridors where the rapid rail transit system (RRTS) will be constructed.

Out if these, the feasibility reports of three corridors are currently being prepared. These are Delhi- Meerut, Delhi-Panipat and Delhi- Rewari- Alwar.

“The connectivity to Delhi will ensure a faster development of these satellite towns. Noida and Gurgaon have witnessed development because of their vicinity to Delhi,” said Noor Mohammad, member Secretary, National Capital Region (NCR) Planning board. The board is a stakeholder in the project.

“This will be something on the lines of suburban railways in London. In terms of quality, it will be somewhere between the rail and a metro,” added he.

The feasibility reports for all the corridors will be out by December after which detailed projects reports will be prepared.

The idea is to avoid land acquisition as much as possible. The project will use elevated route for the train and use the land alongside the existing railway lines in various towns.

“The speed of the project depends on land availability and the willingness of the states involved,” said Noor.

Special Purpose Vehicles will be constituted to raise money for the project.

There is a proposal to set us an NCR transport corporation which will eventually takeover the RRTS.
