Learning about finances was never this easy. The State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday launched its first series of financial literacy comics with an aim of spreading awareness about its financial inclusion schemes. The comics features popular characters like Chacha Chaudhari to explain the benefits of its initiatives in this area.

Under one such scheme, people can open and maintain a no-frills savings account at any of the 700-plus customer service points (CSPs). A maximum amount of Rs 50, 000 can be maintained in this account and a transaction of not more than Rs 10,000 can be done in one go.

More than 75,000 people have opened accounts through CSPs in last two years, involving transactions of around Rs 40 crore.

“Stationary shops, cyber cafés, grocery shops etc in your locality are the CSPs. In case the potential customer does not have valid documents such as the address proof and a photo identity card, he or she can submit a self-declaration to open the account,” said Sunil Pant, chief general manager, SBI.

“The idea is to reach out to those people who do not have access to banking,” he added.

While there are 200 CSPs in Bihar and Jharkhand, the rest are in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

"According to estimates, there is one SBI branch for every 25,000 people in the country. This means there are still many people to whom the banking services have not reached. We are targeting these people through the bank's inclusive schemes," said Abhishesk Sinha, CEO, Eko Aspire Foundation -- a business corespondent of SBI.
