After catering to BPL families, Chhattisgarh Government is now planning to launch a subsidised foodgrain scheme for the people living above poverty line (APL) in the state.

Under the scheme, APL families would be provided rice at the rate of Rs 11 per kg and wheat at Rs 10 a kg, official sources said today.

Acting on the direction of Chief Minister Raman Singh, Food and Civil Supply Minister Punnulal Mohle has asked his department officials to prepare a roadmap to implement the ambitious scheme, they said.

Food and Civil Supply Department Secretary Vivek Dhand said the state has 20 lakh APL families.

The government is considering to start the scheme from June, Dhand said.

Part of the stock of 50,000 tonne rice and 24,000 tonne wheat, received by the state from the Centre, will be distributed under the programme.

BPL families in the tribal-dominated state currently get rice at the rate of Re1/Rs 2 per kg.
