The social media is smelling a rat in the alleged suicide of December 16, gangrape accused Ram Singh who, according to reports, hanged himself in his cell with a rope made of his ‘own clothes’.

No one believes the story of the suicide; and the laxity of the police administration, which is unable to guard its own prisoners in custody, now comes to fore.

On micro-blogging site Twitter, @sahooashish5 remarked, “that Ram Singh suicide hence proved it that Delhi police is inefficient to control things outside and inside their own jail premises.” @Mogambo said, “Anger is not on, "Why" Ram Singh dead, Anger is on after so many Promises "how" this Lapse happens.”
@fakingnews asked what we all want to know as well: “Now I'm also genuinely interested in knowing if kurta-paijama-and-kachchhe-ka-naada are enough to kill oneself.”

Taking a dig at the Delhi High Court for charging Irom Sharmila with attempt to commit suicide for her hunger strike against Armed Forced Special Protection Act (AFSPA), @rameshshrivats added suicide in Ram Singh’s long charge sheet: “was accused of murder, gangrape, unnatural offence, kidnapping, dacoity, destruction of evidence, conspiracy. Now, suicide also.”

@amitksrawat said 'Seems' Ram Singh decided to become judge & executioner as well and change his case from fast-track to hang-track.

@jacobbewda asked a very pertinent question to the police — “Ram Singh - the police can't even keep a check on imprisoned criminals, how can we expect them to keep a check on those roaming free?” — just as @bpandey72 asked “Are the police authorities credible enough for us to lap up their version? Would investigations by police into Ram Singh's death be credible?”

While no death should be a cause for celebration, this one sure is for some. @ARSHIYATABASSUM said, “The suicide of Ram Singh d rape accused is good news Wish d other accused do d same since d law is taking its own sweet time. Good riddance” . On a similar note, @deepakrai88 tweeted, “Why is such a hue and cry about ram singh's death, its the least he deserved..1 down 4 more to go,” — a sentiment echoed by @PawanDurani, who asked, “Why are people unhappy at Ram Singh committing suicide?”

As expected of a medium where rage often takes over from reason, there were some who thought that Ram Singh’s alleged suicide was some sort of a divine justice for the rape victim. @MihirBijur said, “I don't care if the Delhi rape case accused Ram Singh really killed himself, or was killed & then hung. Bottom line is 'quick justice' done.” @prash_GALAXY said, “Other accused should also follow ram singh.”

Few, however, understated that point that Ram Singh died an ‘innocent’ man, at least legally, and that his alleged suicide might hamper the case and the collective memory of the Delhi gangrape victim. @akashbanerjee did differentiate between poetic and legal justice but still missed the main point when he remarked, “Ram Singh's suicide. Poetic Justice for 1. Waiting for Legal Justice for 5 others.”

Perhaps, @naushad summed it up: “Main Accused Ram Singh's suicide is not justice to #Nirbhaya The rapist did what HE WANTED on that Dec night, and he did what HE WANTED today.”

It’s time the police administration read some of those tweets.
