GN Bureau | March 11, 2013

The main accused in the Delhi gang rape case, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with his own clothes inside Tihar Jail in the wee hours of Monday. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to ascertain how Singh managed to kill himself despite being under a “suicide watch”. Singh, one of the six accused in the case, was the driver of the bus in which the 23-year-old paramedical student was raped in December last year. The incident had sparked outrage among various sections of the society with the victim’s family and protesters demanding that the accused be sent to the gallows while some other sections including the Justice Verma committee, which was set up to review laws pertaining to crimes against women, arguing against death penalty.
