2.5 lakh panchayats to be linked to get broadband connectivity

Government's plan is accomplish 250,000 panchayats broadband connectivity in about two years time

The Centre has decided to connect 2.5 lakh panchayats of the country with optical fibre cable-based high capacity broadband and top government officials on Wednesday discussed the issues involved in implementing the programme.

"We had a detailed meeting with Sam Pitroda, advisor to the Prime Minister on public information infrastructure and innovations, and discussed the plan that has been drawn up by his team," Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said after the meeting.

The meeting was also attended by Panchayati Raj Minister Kishore Chandra Deo and secretaries of various Ministries. Ramesh said the government's plan is to connect all 250,000 panchayats of the country with broadband in about two year’s time. "Resources are there" and organising these resources is the only issue which is left, Ramesh said.
