Cabinet approves National Policy on Information Technology

The IT policy will help in the growth of the IT market in India while also boosting exports

The government said on Thursday that the National Policy on Information Technology 2012 has been approved by Cabinet. The policy aims to use information and communications technology effectively for nation's development.


"The Cabinet has recently approved the National Policy on Information Technology 2012," Ministry of Communications and Information said in an official statement.


The policy envisages the growth of the IT market to USD 300 billion and creation of additional 10 million employments by 2020, the statement said.
"... increase revenues of IT and ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) Industry from 100 billion USD currently to 300 billion USD by 2020 and expand exports from 69 billion USD currently to 200 billion USD by 2020,"it added.


Government plans to create a pool of 10 million additional skilled manpower in ICT under the new IT policy.


The statement said that the policy will enhance transparency, accountability, efficiency, reliability and decentralization in government and address in delivery of public services using ICT.


The policy will be notified in the gazette shortly and detailed proposals for individual initiatives will be formulated in consultation with the concerned Ministries, the statement said.
