As many as 784 police offices and 581 police stations in Odisha will be covered under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS) of the Central government.

Offices of DSP/SDPO, SP, DIG and DG would also be connected through the CCTNS, Director of State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) M Akhaya said here today.

The nearly Rs 50-crore programme, taken up under National e-Governance Project (NeGP), is expected to be completed in September next year, said Akhaya, who is also the nodal officer of the project.

He said two police districts - Angul and Bhubaneswar - covering 46 police stations were taken up as pilot project and likely to be completed next month, he added.

Besides the investigation of crimes and tracking of criminals, some other facilities like the record of complaints of the people, record of fingerprints of criminals and verification of passports would also be made, which will be easy on the part of crime control as well as detection of the criminals, he said.

"The people will not need to go to the police station to lodge FIR. They can file the complaint through online after implementation of the project," Akhaya said.

The complainants can also know about the progress of the investigation through the computer, he added.

The police stations will be linked with their counterparts in different states and UTs through networking and to share data, which will help trace criminals, he said.

Around 14,000 police stations and 6,000 higher police offices across the country will be networked in the system.
