Chennai Corporation, in collaboration with a mobile service provider, today launched a unique scheme which will enable voters to get their electoral roll details through Short Messaging Service (SMS).

"Under the scheme, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, registered voters can send an SMS through mobile phones to access key details by typing 'Vote' followed by their EPIC number (Voter's ID card number) and send it to 51913," Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakoni said at the launch of the scheme.

The scheme, which was inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, will be provided by the Corporation in collaboration with mobile service provider Airtel.

The voter would immediately receive details of his/her name, that of his/her father, the constituency, serial number and polling booths where he/she should vote.

For those unable to get the information even after sending an SMS, it meant their names were not available in the voters list.

In such cases, voters would have to contact electoral registration officers concerned in Chennai Corporation zonal office to get their names included in the rolls, Lakoni said.

Currently, the service is available only for voters who are residing within city limits.
