Colombia ranks fifth among Latin American countries in development, access and utility of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), an international report has revealed.

According to the annual survey by the World Economic Forum, Colombia is preceded by Chile, Uruguay, Costa Rica and Brazil, and its position in the global ranking has improved, standing at the 58th position among the 138 analysed states.

Last year, Bogota ranked 60 in the document, which measures the useful application of ICT by individuals, businesses and governments in terms of development of their territories.

Figures from the Ministry of Information Technology indicated that Colombia ended 2010 with 61 per cent of subscribers with fixed access to the internet and only 39 per cent with mobile connectivity.

According to the telecommunications minister, Diego Molano, Colombia maintained an upward trend in the number of broadband connections, with 3.9 million users, and aims to meet the target of 8.8 million in 2014.

Molano attributed the achievements in the field of ICT to the policies implemented to eliminate the value added tax and lower prices of computers and internet rates for entrepreneurs and traders in the country.

According to Molano, these initiatives are helping consumers to acquire more technological equipment, expand infrastructure and create new services.(
