Drivers told to avoid routes manned by police

Some BPOs and corporates in the national capital are trying to bend the official directive to ensure the safety of women employees while dropping them home late at night, according to the Delhi Police.

The police reached this conclusion after the arrest of a driver employed with a prominent low-cost airline in south Delhi for violating provisions of the notification making it mandatory for employers to deploy security guards in cabs ferrying women during night.

"The interrogation of the driver Rohit Gehlot (20) has revealed that BPOs and other organisation are acquainted with the notification issued in this regard.

"But in order to save money, some such organisations do not deploy guards in the cabs ferrying women during the night and the drivers are briefed to avoid routes which are manned by the police," H G S Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (South), said.

Gehlot was arrested early last morning in Chirag Dilli while he was ferrying two women employees of the airline.

"The picket staff noticed that a cab was carrying two women with no security guard in it. The cab was stopped and the driver told that the cab is used to ferry the employees of an airline from IGI airport.

"The driver could not give any satisfactory explanation for not having a guard as required. When the airline manager was contacted, he also could not could not explain the absence of a security guard," Dhaliwal said.

The women employees were safely escorted to their respective residences and a case was registered.

On December 9, Delhi Police had made it mandatory for BPOs, media houses and corporates to deploy a guard in each cab while ferrying women employees during night hours.

As per the notification, the cab drivers were also to ensure that women employees are dropped at their residences.
