After the 2G spectrum controversy, selection of WiMax franchise has come under attack, with the CPM alleging the Telecom Ministry of showing favoritism while choosing franchisee for WiMax services.

The Left party CPM has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, raising concerns over the allotment of WiMax franchise by the state-run BSNL to a Kolkata-based Starnet Communications, which they allege does not meet the eligibility criteria.

The CPM said that the issue appears to be "another shabby deal after the 2G spectrum episode" and asked the Prime Minister to initiate an enquiry by Chief Vigilance Commissioner to check the role of Telecom Ministry in the matter.

In 2009, BSNL had floated the tender for the WiMax franchise.

WiMax, the higher version of 3G technology, allows users wireless access to high-speed internet and other data applications over a large area.

The letter raised concerns over the tender being issued to the company even when they call themselves consultancy firm for the emerging auto industry.

BSNL has a pan-Indian BWA (broadband wireless access) spectrum in the 2.5 GHz frequency band.
