A college professor in the city was duped by unidentified cyber fraudsters who allegedly tricked him into divulging his bank account details, under the pretext of securing IT refund, and withdrew Rs 90,000 from his account, police said on Sunday.

Hrushikeshavan, who teaches at an engineering college, received an e-mail on April 27 from a website claiming to be that of the Income Tax Department, asking him to part with his account details to enable him to secure a refund of Rs 36,000.

On Jun 23, he received another mail from the same source seeking his account details and the unsuspecting professor provided the information, said police.

However, he discovered to his shock that Rs 90,000 had been transferred to three other accounts, following which he lodged a police complaint, they said. The cyber wing of the force is investigating the case.
