Delhi Government on Wednesday set up a committee to examine possible health hazards from radiations from mobile towers.

The decision to set up the committee, comprising officials from health and environment departments, was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

"The committee will examine all aspects related to the issue," said a senior official, who was present in the meeting.

The central government last week said it will implement new tower emission norms from September 1 although there is no evidence that proves any adverse health effects due to radiations from mobile towers.

As per the new norms, emission from mobile towers will be reduced by 1/10 of the current standards.

An inter-ministrial committee (IMC) on electro-magnetic field (EMF) was constituted by Department of Telecom (DoT) to examine the health related concerns arising out of mobile towers radiations.

But the IMC was unable to find any direct link between exposure to radio frequency radiation from mobile towers and health.

However, the IMC recommeded as a precautionary measure to cut the emission norms by 1/10th, which were accepted by DoT.
