Delhi to have digital info, mapping of city's assets

CM moves geo-spatial data infrastructure bill in the assembly

In first such project in the country, Delhi government has nearly completed digitisation and mapping of all underground and overground assets like telephone lines, water pipes and other public utilities in three-dimensional digital format.
Under the project, the government will soon unveil a unique portal comprising images and digital details of all the overground and underground utilities and it will be made available to 30 departments of the city government.
As the ambitious project is nearing completion, the Delhi Geo-spatial Data Infrastructure (Management, Control, Administration, Security and Safety) Bill, 2011 was introduced in the Delhi Assembly today which will ensure that each of the 30 agencies becomes the part of the project.
The bill was moved by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the House.
Under the project, a common and integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) will be made available to the departments to design and implement various projects.
The bill aims at "creating, updating, managing, disseminating and sharing for Delhi a geo-spatial data, geo-spatial map, geo-spatial application, geo-spatial portal of Delhi," its statement of objects and reasons said.
It said this will serve as the "base for planning and executing various development projects, utility services to be undertaken by various departments, corporations, boards of government of NCT of Delhi, local bodies, public authorities, public and private agencies to achieve goals of coordinated planning, effective governance, public welfare in Delhi."
Officials had earlier said that the Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure (DSSDI) project is one of its kind in the entire world in which all the underground utilities in the city are being mapped using state-of-art technology of 'ground probing radars'. Thirty agencies including local bodies and private agencies rendering services of public utility will be brought under the ambit of the project.
The portal is expected to help in ensuring a better work culture in the capital city as all records and data will be available on fingertips to effectively implement the schemes and policies resulting in fulfilling aspirations of people.
