Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday underlined the need for integration of information technology into school curriculum, saying education can be instrumental in further developing technological capability of the country.

"For developing countries like India, investing in computer education can be instrumental in building indigenous technological capability," Dikshit said after launching an initiative called "E-Hope for Computer Education" sponsored by private firm Huawei India.

Dikshit said empowering school children with the latest technology is one of the major challenge facing the country in the education sector.

Under the programme Huawei India will provide brand new desktop computers to 1,000 secondary schools across India free of costs as part of its corporate social responsibility endeavour.

Centre for Market Research and Social Development (CMSD) is implementing the project in Delhi.

The Chief Minister also distributed 100 computers to 10 Delhi Government schools under the programme.
