e-Governance project to strengthen consumer fora: Thomas

CONFONET, being executed by the ministry of food and consumer affairs, will facilitate speedy redressal of consumer grievances

The government is implementing an e-governance project,'CONFONET', for speedy redressal of consumer grievances, Food and Consumer Affairs minister K V Thomas said on Wednesday.

As of now 35 State Commissions and 593 district fora out of 629 have been covered under the project, Thomas said while inaugurating a newly constructed building in the Capital.

Highlighting the need for intense consumer awareness programmes, the minister said it was important to built consumer confidence at the time when markets are growing very fast and variety of new services are being introduced.

Chairman of National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission Ashok Bhan said consumer fora were doing a good job which could be gauged from the fact that disposal rate is around 90 per cent.

"Out of 35 lakh consumer rights related cases filed since setting up of the three-tier consumer fora in 1988, 32 lakh cases have been solved and disposed," he said. He, however, stressed on further strengthening of the consumer fora by filling up vacancies.

Rajeev Aggarwal, Secretary, Food and Consumer Affairs asked the state governments to further improve infrastructure of consumer fora at state and district level.
