Ensure freedom of expression: cyber society

Suggests better coordination between security agencies to avert NE exodus like situation

PTI | August 31, 2012

A cyber NGO today suggested better coordination among security agencies, besides use of home grown operating systems to prevent recurrence of incidents like recent rumours which triggered an exodus of North Easterners from Bangalore.

The Cyber Society of India while welcoming the recent government directive to block certain internet websites and regulate number of SMSes, also urged government to ensure that freedom of expression did not fall a victim in this process.

Steps like seeking identity proof for creating a website, better coordination among agencies like NRTO, IB, R&AW and state governments and appointing a 'Super Monitoring Nodal Agency' to exclusively focus on cyber security were some suggestions made by office-bearers of the Chennai-based NGO.

"As a long-term solution, India should develop and use indigenous operating systems, search engines, servers, anti-virus and softwares and if possible, the necessary hardware too. This will ensure self-dependence," they said.

Further, existing provisions in IT Act are "sufficient" to handle cyber attacks, they told reporters in Chennai.
