Facebook campaign brings hundreds to streets in Nepal

Campaign to press for the promulgation of new constitution by May, 28

Hundreds of Nepalese including beauty queens, journalists, law makers and civil society members gathered near the government administrative complex here today to press for timely drafting of the constitution.

The people, inspired by a Facebook campaign, gathered around 3 pm at Maitighar Mandala, near 'Singhdurbar Secretariat', to press for the promulgation of new constitution within May 28 deadline.

Give us the constitution by May 28, if not don't take salary for the next extension, which should be only for six months, said Ujjwol Thapa, initiator of the campaign on Facebook.

The taxpayers money should not be misused for petty political pursuits and for extending CA terms endlessly, he pointed out.

The campaign ? Parivartan Ka Lagi Hami Nepali Ek (We Nepalis unite for change) ? was discussed by a dozen people at a tea party last week and it turned into a Facebook campaign which succeeded in gathering hundreds of people.

Miss Nepal Sadichha Shrestha, former Miss Nepal Malawika Subba and gay rights activist and Lawmaker Sunil Babu Panta were among those who were present in the gathering.

We are also planning to send sms to lawmakers asking them to accomplish the task of drafting the constitution on time, said Lawmaker Panta.

"We are tired of their rhetorics that lack content and coherence. It's high time every citizen asked what is happening with the constitution-drafting process," said a participant.
