The Chief Minister launched the scheme for Ajmer, Jodhpur and Udaipur postal circle through video conferencing at a function here.

The 12-digit unique number will store basic demographics and biometric information of each individual such as photograph, ten fingerprints and iris in a central database and can be used for various government and private services and benefits.

Speaking on the occasion, Gehlot said the responsibility given to the postal department was challenging but it was important because this is the first time when people will get their own unique identification number.

Union Minister of State for Communication and IT, Sachin Pilot said the department of posts will play an important role in the implementation of the scheme.

The minister further said that over 1.5 lakh post offices will be computerised by next year.
