To enable citizens to directly reach out to police on traffic violations and also to keep them updated on traffic situation in the city, the Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) on Wednesday  launched two unique services its 'Facebook page' and a free 'SMS traffic alert facility'.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) C V Anand, who officially launched the Facebook page of the Hyderabad Traffic Police, told reporters that this facility through the popular social networking site will inform a large section of commuters, particularly youths and IT employees about various initiatives of Traffic Police including enforcement.

The Facebook initiative, which was launched on a trial basis about six months back, has attracted 3,600 friends/likes who have been posting photos of violations by motorists and also bringing their grievances on traffic violations, he said.

The Facebook facility may also be used to report traffic violations (including those committed by Police and other government Department vehicles) by posting photos or videograph with details like date, time and location of the site, Anand said adding HTP officials will regularly respond to various queries, feedbacks and suggestions and infact, replies may be given in Telugu too.

"We will be using the Facebook platform to educate its friends about various special drives and also on Motor Vehicles Laws," he said.

The free SMS service facility, which was simultaneously launched on the occasion, will alert commuters about traffic situations including on traffic jams, live traffic situations and also referring alternate routes.

This facility which was launched in collaboration with 'SMSGupshup' will have six different groups to specify the location for which the traffic alerts are needed, Anand said.

Hyderabadis also have the option of enrolling to SMS traffic alert facility through a web application placed on Facebook page and also HTP website, he added.
