IBM to focus on retaining top slot in storage space

UID project will give fillip to storage solution demand

PTI | October 8, 2010

Technology giant IBM is looking at maintaining its numero uno position in the Indian data storage market with the launch of a new product 'IBM Storwize V7000', which will help clients lessen their workload.

"The quantity of data generated everyday is growing and so the requirement for storage is also going up. In such a condition, storage solutions need to not just efficiently manage data, but also need to help in optimising the workload," IBM India/South Asia Vice President (Storage Systems and Technology Group) Sandeep Dutta told PTI.

The product 'IBM Storwize V7000' is designed to manage data flow efficiently and cost effectively and reduce storage rack space, allowing room for clients' future expansion.

Dutta said sectors like telecom, media and entertainment along with data-centric projects like UIDAI (Aadhaar) would give further fillip to the demand for storage solutions.

According to research firm IDC, storage market in India is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.8 per cent from 2011-2015.

IBM has emerged the leader in the Indian external disk storage market in terms of factory revenue in April-June 2010 quarter with a 26.8 per cent market share, as per IDC's Asia/Pacific Enterprise Disk Storage Tracker (Q2 2010).

"While we were No. 1 last year, we continue to maintain our leadership position even in the first half of the year. We constantly focus on product renovation to suit the customer's requirements," he said.
