SMS updates on passport status to begin in 10 days

PTI | November 22, 2010

The facility of SMS updates on passport status will be started within 10 days, an official said here today.

Information about the status and other updates will be sent on the mobile phones of the applicants through SMSs, Regional Passport Officer Jalandhar Parneet Singh said.

"I have taken up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs at New Delhi yesterday about this facility," he said.

He said in order to bring transparency and check the involvement of agents, two counters for guidance and help and surveillance cameras have been put up outside the Passport Office at Jalandhar while one more counter was being set-up.

"To decrease paper work, counters will soon have laptops to fill up the application forms online," he said, adding "around 12000 Passports were being issued monthly by Jalandhar office."
