James Murdoch calls for digitisation of infrastructure

Digitisation in media will create millions of jobs

PTI | March 24, 2011

James Murdoch, the Chairman and Chief Executive of News Corporation for Europe and Asia, today said that digitisation of infrastructure is critical to unlock the potential of India's creative sector, that is all set to grow from USD 15-billion to USD 120-billion over the next few years.

Addressing the FICCI FRAMES 2011 here, Murdoch said, "digitisation and competition had the prospect of raising the size of India's media and entertainment sector from USD 15- billion to USD 120-billion as the creative sector could grow in proportion to its size in other advanced economies."

The digitisation would also help create millions of new jobs by revolutionising sectors such as education and healthcare.

"The Indian industry would have the incentives to invest and create. By ensuring that India's creative market is competitive at home, Indian creators, storytellers, and journalists would undoubtedly be hoisted to the world stage," Murdoch said, adding that digitisation brings content, distribution and connectivity together.

Countries determined to modernise their economies have put digital infrastructure at the top of their priorities, he said, adding that the best way is to accelerate the liberalisation of digital broadcasting. .
