With the launch of a pilot automation and networking project, Jammu and Kashmir is set to switch over to online public libraries.

"The launch of the automation and networking project of the public libraries is a significant initiative to switch over from manual to online libraries," Director Libraries and Research Khalid Bashir Ahmed said.

He said in the first phase, four major public libraries -- Sri Ranbir Singh Central Library, Sri Pratap Singh Central library, Oriental Research Library and City Central Library -- would be automated and connected through a network.

After the successful completion of the pilot project, other libraries would be automated and made part of a single networking system, Ahmed said at the three-day workshop here.

He said under another project work was being undertaken to digitise the collection of rare books in various languages and make them available on the internet along with treasure of around 6,000 manuscripts.
