Laptops' market to expand by over 45 pc in India in FY12: Sony

Company plans to double its sales of notebooks from 2.5 lakh in last fiscal to 5 lakh notebooks

Leading consumer electronics brand Sony India today said the market size of laptops in the country is expected to expand by over 45 per cent to 25 lakh units in the current fiscal.

"The consumer notebook market in India stood 17 lakh units in 2010-2011 and it is expected to increase to 25 lakh units in the current fiscal," Tadato Kimura, General Manager, Marketing, Sony India, said here.

However, the market size of notebook does not include institutional sales. The company plans to double its sales of notebooks from 2.5 lakh in last fiscal to 5 lakh notebooks, fuelled by growing acceptance of its Vaio range of laptops.

"We have an exciting product line-up of 62 models, a robust distribution network of 1,500 outlets and heavy marketing investment of Rs 50 crore to reach our business target of 5 lakh units in 2011-12," he said.

In Punjab, Sony targets to double sales by selling 40,000 units of Vaio laptops as against up from 20,000 units sold in the last fiscal.

He said consumer notebook market in Punjab stood at 1.45 lakh units in 2010-11 and it is expected to increase to 1.9 lakh units in 2011-12. Punjab contributes 7 per cent in its total sales of Vaio.

Sony offers an extensive Vaio line-up that is aimed at different consumer segments with varied lifestyle requirements ranging from business class to college goers to even casual PC users.

"Vaio contributes 20 per cent to the total sales revenue of Sony India and hence a very important part of our business.

This year, our objective is to ensure that we offer a Vaio to meet the lifestyle requirements of every customer," he said.

Sony has also plans to open 30 exclusive Vaio flagship stores in this fiscal to deepen its market presence in the country. The opening of new outlets will take the total store strength to 50, he added.
