Union Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora on Thursday announced formation of a complaint centre for citizens to file their mobile tower related grievance.

The minister, who inspected radiation level of mobile towers in Haji Ali area, also announced plans to strengthen the Telecom Enforcement Reserve and Monitoring cell of the Department of Telecommunications.

The inspection was conducted at Haji Ali, one of Mumbai's busiest junctions witnessing traffic of over 10 lakh individuals on a daily basis, a release said.

The cell is in charge of monitoring, security and vigilance functions at the DoT and monitors the Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) radiations from the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites in accordance with prescribed government norms.

Deora said that after he took over as minister, he received various complaints from citizens on the levels of radiation emitted by mobile towers in the city.

"If excessive radiations are found during surprise random checks, they would be dealt with as per law. We are strengthening the cell across India by adding manpower and radiation measurement machinery to ensure that people in urban as well as rural areas are safe from radiation," he said.

If any site fails to meet the EMF criterion set by the government, there is a provision of levy of a penalty of Rs 5 lakhs and on continued violation the site would be shut down, a senior official, who accompanied Deora, said.
