No 'road block' in setting up Natgrid: Chidambaram

NAtgrid work will start when the cabinet committee on security gives its nod.

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday made it clear that there was no "road block" as such in setting up the National Intelligence Grid (Natgrid) and its work will start when the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) gives its nod.

"There is no road block. The Detailed Project Report has to be considered by the CCS. So, they have to fix the date for the CCS in which a decision has to be taken," he said when asked whether there was any hurdle in setting up the project.

Chidambaram said whatever concerns regarding the architecture would brought to the CCS, it will be discussed at the meeting.

"The CCS will take a decision whether approval should be granted to Natgrid DPR. If approval is given, we will then begin the Natgrid," he said.

The Natgrid -- the Home Ministry's ambitious project -- after it comes into operation will facilitate robust information sharing by security agencies and law enforcement agencies to combat terror threat at home and abroad.

The fate of Natgrid has been hanging in balance due to the "turf war" among various stakeholders, particularly Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Finance with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The MoD and MoF apparently think that if the project comes into operation, the MHA would have uninterrupted access to all information under their jurisdiction.

However, the government has decided to extend the service of Chief Executive Officer of Natgrid Raghu Raman for six months beginning June 1, raising hope for early implementation of the proposed Natgrid.
