NSDL appointed Registrar for UID project

To enroll residents for UIDAI

PTI | February 22, 2011

The National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) today said it has been appointed as a Registrar by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for implementation the UID project.

The Registrar is required to enrol residents following the protocols, standards, processes and guidelines laid down by the UIDAI.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by UIDAI's Deputy Director General, B B Nanawati and NSDL Executive Director Jayesh Sule.

NSDL is the largest depository in India serving more than one-crore investors and ranks among the top 10 depositories in the world in terms of assets in custody.

UIDAI has been created as an office under the Planning Commission. Its role is to develop and implement the necessary institutional, technical and legal infrastructure to issue UID numbers to Indian residents that can be verified and authenticated in an online, cost-effective manner and which is robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fake identities.

Over five-years, the Authority plans to issue 600 million UIDs. The numbers will be issued through various 'Registrar' agencies across the country.
