Oil cos to get Aadhaar card-readers for LPG services

BPCL to get 5 machines and HPCL to get 10 machines

GN Bureau | April 25, 2013

To speed up the direct benefit transfer (DBT) for LPG cylinders, oil companies will get Aadhaar card-reading machines from UIDAI. A pilot is to be launched in Pune where Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is to get 5 machines and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) will be getting 10.

A BPCL official, quoted in a Times of India report, said, “The district administration has proposed the setting up additional Aadhaar-enrollment centers exclusively for LPG customers. The Aadhaar machine given to the BPCL distributors will help weed out bilking by weeding out multiple connections for a single household. Only those in whose names the connection have been made out will be enlisted, not their family members.”

The government authorities are already requesting those who have their Aadhaar card to seed the numbers to their bank accounts. Those opting out of it may lose out on the subsidy amount.

The oil company said that approximately 80,000 BPCL customers, out of a total of 12.4 lakh, have already seeded their Aadhaar numbers with their bank accounts.

On the other hand, out of the total 9.9 lakh HPCL customers, 1.5 lakh have already seeded their numbers with the account.

Although the city has not received any official deadline for the process, many other cities have already been set a deadline.  The BPCL official explained, "About 60 percent Aadhaar enrollment has been done in Pune. It has to reach 80 percent or more after which a deadline for seeding of Aadhaar numbers to bank accounts will be announced for Pune,"

In order to link the Aadhaar cards with the bank accounts, applicants will have to attach a copy of their Aadhaar card with other details and the DGCC booklet to the respective distributor and the card number to the banks.
