Registration for issuance of Aadhaar nos to be over by October

5.4 lakh people, including 70,000 homeless people have already been registered for the issuance of Aadhaar numbers

Delhi Government today said it will complete the process of registration for issuance of Aadhaar identification numbers to people in the city by October.

Divisional Commissioner Dharmendra said already 5.4 lakh people, including 70,000 homeless people have been registered in the city for the issuance of Aadhaar numbers. "Currently registration process was going on in two disricts. We will start the process in the remaining seven districts from June one. We will complete the process by October," he told reporters here.

Asking people to cooperate in the project, Dharmender said anybody with a valid identity proof can register for getting the Aadhar number. "If somebody does not have an identity proof, then he or she will have to have an introducer. Even NGOs can play the role of introducer for the homeless people," he said. "UID number now known as 'Aadhar number' will be issued to every person who is a resident of Delhi and it includes new borns as well. However, biometric details will be taken of those who are five years and above," he said.

He said biometric-based data -- fingerprints and image of iris are being used for the first time to provide a cost-effective nationally valid and verifiable single source of identity proof through an authentification infrastructure. "UIDAI is providing financial assistance of Rs 50 per successful enrolment to the state government. In addition, UIDAI will also provide financial assistance of Rs 100 to every BPL family on successful enrolment of the members," the official said.
