Michael Dell, founder and CEO of world's second largest PC maker Dell Inc, today sounded buoyed by the "fantastic opportunity" India presents and said the revenues from the country would soon touch USD 2 billion.

"India today offers a fantastic opportunity to use technology for a wide range of applications. We see a tremendous opportunity for growth of the PC segment in this country," the Dell chief said at a FICCI event here.

With penetration level of about 20-30 computers per 1,000 people, the growth opportunity is tremendous in India, he added.

Dell said his company is approaching USD 2 billion in annual revenue in India. "USD 2 billion is the milestone that our India team is now working on," the Dell chief said without disclosing the timeframe for the target.

The company, which has 23,000 employees in India, also plans to add "a few thousand" people.

Dell's business activities in the country include research and development and manufacturing in Sriperumbudur.

Dell notched up USD 61.49 billion in global revenues for the year ended December, 2010.

Revenues from India, which is an important market for Dell, grew by 37 per cent.

While its consumer business in India grew by 41 per cent, Dell's small and medium businesses unit and public sector vertical grew by 52 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively.

Dell does not disclose country-specific numbers.

In India, the company has focus on three areas -- hardware business, education and healthcare, and management and services offerings in the country, he said.

Dell said the company is focussing on understanding the needs of customers in India and is concentrating on verticals like retail, finance, banking, healthcare and education. PTI SR PC MR NS
