SAP partners with IIM-Shillong to deploy e-gov solution

Cloud-based e-governance solution to help in improving citizen services and village administration in the Shillong region

PTI | August 23, 2012

Enterprise solutions provider SAP on Wednesday said it has partnered with IIM-Shillong (IIM-S) to deploy its cloud-based e-governance solution, which will help in improving citizen services and village administration in the Shillong region.

"This is an extension of a similar model that we deployed in Soda village in Rajasthan. The project aims to bring in transformation at the grassroot level by providing village administration with technology and ensuring a more effective, transparent and accountable delivery of citizen services," SAP India COO Alok Goyal told PTI.

Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (IIM-S) will act as the facilitator to the project, helping identify project sites and liasoning with local bodies when required, he added.

As part of the project, SAP will automate operational areas like tracking and control of funds, budget and expense management, accounting, management of local assets, project and scheme implementation and citizen services.

"We intend to effectively use our expertise in the North East region and create a scalable model to go to the 600,000 similar villages across India," Goyal said.

Besides, the company has also partnered with Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) to launch 'Project Accessibility', which aims to facilitate employability to the differently-abled in public and private sector.

"This is not just a product for us but an initiative to promote accessibility standards in enterprise software to facilitate employability to the differently-abled in different sectors," he said.

SAP has set up a team to test SAP software for accessibility needs. The team will define and maintain the accessibility standards as well as perform internal accessibility technology assessments as per globally defined parameters.

"Ensuring that needs of the differently-abled are met with and that they have an equal opportunity is crucial for inclusive growth of the country," he said.

It is estimated that there are over 70 million people with disabilities in India.

The company has also announced the availability of its ERP solution Hindi in India, which will enable customers update and manage employee documents, transact various processes and generate reports in the local language.

"This is the largest investment by SAP for bringing out a local language edition. Hindi is the official Indian language and preferred language of transaction for over 40 per cent of the population," Goyal said.

The solution will help organisations, especially public sector, to handle areas like logistics including India taxation, accounting, employee data, provident fund, payroll including pay-slip, loans, claims and employee self services, he added.

The Hindi version was developed by SAP Labs India along with agencies including the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) and language experts, covering over 4.5 million coding lines.

Besides, SAP has also launched its File Lifecycle Management solution to improve the file management processes for Indian public sectors.

SAP File Lifecycle Management digitises file management encompassing all stages including filing system, organisation, workflow management, document uploads, file notings, correspondence, incoming 'dak', administrative and access regulations, alerts and analytics.

Conceived, designed and developed by SAP Labs India, the solution is targetted at PSUs.
