SMS alert launched in Kerela to help distressed women

Distressed women can take help of women's plan officials by sending an SMS to a dedicated number 537252

The Kerela Women's Commission has launched an SMS alert, a system that allow women victims to register their call with the police whenever they are in trouble.

Women in any part of the State can seek the help of women's panel officials if they are in distress by sending an SMS to a dedicated number 537252, officials said.

All such messages would be passed on to the State Police Monitoring Room, where the sender's number would be sorted out and assistance provided with the help of respective local police stations, they said.

Launching the service here last evening, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said it would help instill self-confidence in women.

"Providing space for women to lodge complaints is more important than the number of cases attended," he said.

The idea for such a service was mooted a year back by the chairperson of Kerala Women's Commission Justice (Rtd) D Sreedevi.

The system was developed with technical support of National Informatics Centre after a series of tests of its technological feasibility and social acceptance.

The service comes into effect at a time when Kerala's image has been dented by cases of atrocities and sexual crimes against women.
