Tamil Nadu government to purchase 9, 12,000 laptops

Government to start distribution from September 15, 2011

Tamil Nadu chief minister, J Jayalalitha is all set to fulfil her election promise of free distribution of laptops to students studying in government and government aided schools and colleges.

The state government through an order has entrusted the task of procuring the laptops under this scheme to Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT). The company is a wholly owned undertaking of government of Tamil Nadu and was established in 1977.

The state undertaking also handled the procurement and distribution of free Colour TVs in the previous DMK government. It is estimated that over152.8 lakhs families benefitted from the colour TV scheme. 

For the current scheme the laptops will be procured in through competitive bidding process and Elcot has already issued a tender document for same.

The distribution of laptops in state will start from September 15th, 2011.

In the current year the state has decided to distribute 9.12 lakhs laptop. The laptop makers are looking to an order of over 100 Crore from the state government.
