Tembhali to become first 'Aadhaar' village in the country

PM to launch UID project from Maha village

PTI | September 21, 2010

Prime minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the ambitious Unique Identification (UID) project at Tembhali village in north Maharashtra's Nandurbar district this month-end.

"The Prime Minister is launching the UID project, now called Aadhar project, at Tembhali this month-end," regional deputy director general of Adhar project, Ajay Bhushan Pande told PTI.

Tembhali, with a population of 1,098, will become the first 'Aadhar' village in the country, the senior IAS official said. The village is in Shahada tehsil of tribal Nandurbar district. It is the same district from where Congress leaders have been launching election campaigns over the years.

A workshop for revenue department was conducted at the collector's office here last week to train staff for the project.

In the state, the UID programme is being implemented between November 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011.

The 12-digit Adhar number will be mandatory for all government schemes and will serve as unique identification number for citizens.

To get the number, citizens are required to produce any of the 29 listed documents as the proof of domicile. If no document is produced, the district collector in rural areas and municipal commissioners in the urban areas will be authorised to issue a certificate of identity.
