Three satellite phones seized from broadcasting firm

The seizure came following investigators receiving an intelligence input that a satellite phone was used to contact Delhi mobile numbers.

Delhi Police has seized three satellite phones from a news broadcasting firm which was using them without permission.

The seizure came following investigators receiving an intelligence input that a satellite phone was used to contact Delhi mobile numbers.

As per the provisions of law, a senior police official said, use of satellite phone in India is illegal without prior permission of Department of Telecommunication and it attracts the violation of Section 4 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.

During enquires, the official said, it was revealed that the satellite phone sets belong to a broadcasting channel. The authorised officer of the channel told police that the channel is engaged in business of news coverage in South Asia and in emergency cases their Delhi office uses these three official satellite phones.

Three satellite phones were seized from the firm as they were not able to produce any official permission from Department of Telecommunication.
