The Tamil Nadu Government is in the process of devising a "restructured Rural BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) policy" to attract more entrepreneuers from urban areas to invest in rural areas, IT Minister R B Udhayakumar said on Thursday.

"The restructured policy will be devised to attract entrepreneurs to set up their centres in rural areas. By establishing these centres, job opportunities will be created in rural areas on par with urban areas", he said in the state assembly.

As a first step, a Rural BPO centre would be set up in tune with the "enhanced rural BPO policy" at Chief Minister Jayalalitha's home constituency Srirangam in Tiruchirapalli district by state-owned Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT).

He said students from rural areas would also be trained with necessary skill-set for competing in the global market. Under this scheme, around 2,500 students will be trained in 2011-12 at a cost of Rs five crore.

On the government's proposal on E-District provided in Krishnagiri on a pilot basis for issuing 'patta', birth/death certificates, marriage assistance and scholarship through Common Service Centres, he said such a Centre would be set up in Chennai and its suburbs. Health, education, entertainment and tele-medicine would also be rendered to the public through these centres, he added.
