The Tamil Nadu government will soon go the e-way in a bid to provide services more effectively to the people of the state.

"Mere automation will not lead to efficiency in government processes. A focused public policy with a guided approach to output aimed at e-governance is necessary to improve productivity levels within government," a policy note tabled in the Assembly said.

"The government will pro-actively engage citizens in all its e-governance initiatives following the citizen engagement guidelines of the government of India," it said.

It said the Centre was in the process of introducing a bill in Parliament to mandate Electronic Services Delivery to citizens within a specified time frame during 2011-12 and a draft bill has been placed in the public domain for inputs and suggestions.

The government would encourage educational institutions in the state to become part of the central government-initiated National Knowledge Network, it said.

The note said the government "will take advantage of National Knowledge Network to improve the e-governance efforts and also encourage all educational institutions to be part of this network."

The Centre had in its 2008-09 budget had announced setting up of a National Knowledge Network.
