TNSEC to use 92,000 EVMs for local body polls

This was the first time EVMs were being used in the local body elections

A total of 92,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be used in the local body elections to be held in Tamil Nadu on October 17 and 19.

"The Commission will employ 92,451 EVMs across the state. Chennai will have 4,876 polling booths with 20,525 EVMs," a Tamil Nadu State Election Commission release said on Friday.

Names of the contestants would be entered into the EVMs by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) officials, it said.

These technical officials from BHEL will reach all the districts a day before the poll date.

The commission will use 41, 587 EVMs for municipal coporations and 20,864 and 30,000 EVMs for municipalities and municipal panchayats respectively.

This was the first time EVMs were being used in the local body elections.
